Student to Student - Occupational Therapy

October 27, 2022 - Savanah Duran

Hi everyone,

Savannah Duran is outside and smiles for the camera. My name is Savanah Duran and I’m a Community Health Education major minoring in psychology. I plan on graduating this coming May and applying to grad school for occupational therapy. My dream job is to be a pediatric occupational therapist working with children with motor and brain disabilities. Last fall semester, I had the opportunity to work on a research internship that I really enjoyed and learned a lot from it. With that internship, I got to write about 15 different diseases and disabilities and research different article case studies that support different forms of treatment for each disease and disability. By completing that research internship, I realized how much I love health promotion and the importance of educating and advocating for certain health issues.

This semester, I am interning with the UNM SHAC Health Promotion and working on advocating for UNM’s Lobo Prevention Pack around campus. I also hope by the end of this semester to build resilience and confidence among students to avoid burnout as well as assess students’ physical activity and help them identify UNM’s physical activity resources. This internship thus far has been fulfilling and I have been enjoying my time working with UNM SHAC Health Promotion. I look forward to working on future SHAC events and learning from those opportunities to better my experience and use that knowledge towards future endeavors.
