AIG, Educational Markets

Students are not required to have health insurance to be seen at Student Health & Counseling (SHAC). However, SHAC strongly recommends that all students have health insurance to help defray the costs of health care. The UNM Accident and Sickness Health Insurance Program is available to students enrolled for six or more hours in the fall or spring semester (3 or more hours in the summer). The plan provides for hospital, surgical, and outpatient medical care beyond that provided by SHAC.

Services for the policy are coordinated by AIG, Educational Markets. The underwriter is National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, PA. For complete information about the plan, including cost of coverage and an enrollment application, visit or call 1-888-622-6001.

The policy is geared to the needs of UNM students and provides coverage for a semester or a 12-month period regardless of geographic location. Dependent and spouse coverage is also available. The Student Insurance Plan also offers optional dental coverage. Enrollment is limited to a three-week period at the beginning of each semester. An Insurance Specialist is available to assist students with insurance claims and other insurance issues. Note: International students are required to have health coverage while enrolled. The student health insurance policy can meet this requirement.

For students enrolled in commercial insurance plans, see Other Health Insurance. If you would like an insurance brochure or more information, fill out a separate request.

Note: Educational information is available about General Health Insurance plans (including terminology), as well as the current Student Health Insurance Plans A & B.
