Health Promotion Staff Profile: Education Support Coordinator
September 27, 2022 - Monica Herrera
My name is Monica Herrera (she/her pronouns). I am your new Education Support Coordinator at SHAC Health Promotion. I am so excited to start this new journey and be a part of all the SHAC events that take place around campus as well as here at the Health Promotion office. Throughout my time attending UNM, I was a student teacher as a physical educator at different schools around Albuquerque. From meeting the students, to being in different classrooms, it really pushed me to find ways to help students succeed but also pursue a healthy lifestyle. Getting this experience of working with students again will give me the opportunity to share important topics regarding student health and all the great services SHAC has to offer.
A little about me, I’m born and raised from Albuquerque, New Mexico. I graduated from West Mesa High School in 2016, where I played different sports and was vice president of my class, from there I went onto CNM where I graduated with my certificate in Health, Wellness, and Public Safety. After I graduated from CNM I transferred to UNM and started my bachelor's degree in Physical Education. Some things that I enjoy doing in my leisure time would be spending time with friends and family, going to the lake, listening to music or watching true crime shows on Netflix. Fun fact about me is I really like sharks!
Starting my college career, I began to understand more and more about the importance of physical and mental health and just how much of an impact it can have on your day-to-day life. I’ve learned that it is crucial to have a healthy balance in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. One of my goals is to assist students with mental, physical and sexual health in any way that I can, including finding the resources needed to help and make any kind of impact that I can.
I’m happy to be working with this team and all the different experiences it will bring. I’m hoping to see you all at the next SHAC event! If you ever see me around campus, please don’t hesitate to introduce yourself or if you ever need any assistance don’t be scared to reach out. See Ya'll around!
