He is a graduate of UNM School of Medicine and completed a residency in Family Practice in the Department of Family Practice and Community Medicine at UNM. He worked for Bernalillo County Health Office as a physician in the STD clinic. He worked as a family practitioner shortly thereafter at Lovelace Family Practice in Albuquerque for nearly eleven years. While he was there he became a second-generation educator for the New Mexico AIDS Training and Education Center at the UNM medical school, a voluntary position in which his task was to educate other physicians on HIV-related topics.

His interests include infectious diseases and teaching. He has done fieldwork in the past doing bubonic plague surveys in NM when he was an undergraduate student. Being at SHAC enables him to teach residents from the medical school and, most important of all, his patients.
