Therapeutic Relationships/Confidentiality

Confidentiality within Student Health & Counseling (SHAC) is considered essential for effective treatment. Students are encouraged to participate in treatment planning, and to raise any concerns about methods or techniques used by the clinician providing the student's care. A therapeutic relationship based on respect and safety is also considered essential. Therefore, working relationships between students and providers exclude sexual intimacies, financial transactions, and/or personal friendships. No record of services received are kept in placement files or official transcripts. Because E-mail is not considered confidential, communication between the student and provider via E-mail is against SHAC policy. By law and professional ethics, the limits to confidentiality may be exercised if, in the judgment of the treating provider, there is a serious threat to self or others, suspected child or elderly abuse, or court orders by a judge.
